About Arteria

We are a diverse, multi-cultural team of educators and entrepreneurs that are united by the conviction that quality education is the cornerstone of a sustainable and healthy community. As a nonprofit, we generate support for our work through events, volunteers, and donations, which are reinvested into our innovative educational project. We are located in the neighborhood of Cuxtitali, in the eastern section of the city of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas. The home of Arteria includes classrooms, workshops, studios, and a gallery. We welcome the participation of all citizens who share the goal of developing the talents, skills and capacities of everyone in our community; especially the women and youth.

Growing Capacity
and
Community in Chiapas

There is an exciting quality of community spirit that emerges when people collaborate with Arteria Chiapas. The enthusiastic and spontaneous intentionality of community participation fuels our motivation to keep working on this project!

Healthy communities are sensitized to share values that are reinvested into the community; the essence of sustainability. Therefore, Arteria primarily uses recycled materials for its classes and workshops. We inspire youth to think about product lifecycles and landfills, to create new products out of used materials, and to be conscious and skeptical about society’s relationship to ‘waste’.

The philosophical center of Arteria’s work is critical observation and sensitization toward value-based, individual and community responsibility that honors collaboration, sharing and friendship. The practical application of our work is gentle inspiration toward creative and thoughtful approaches to many of today’s critical issues.

Our programs focus on local women and children because they are the most likely to be marginalized through poverty, and are the most impacted though access to education and economic opportunities.

Educational and work experience are keys to genuine empowerment of women and children, which lead to lasting, generational transformations from within the community.
